The Coconino County Health Department provides information about smoke concerns and offers suggestions for minimizing smoke impacts to your family and home at the following website http://www.coconino.az.gov/health.aspx?id=6564.
Burns at Fort Valley, Upper Beaver Creek today; Tentative prescribed fire plans next week.
Flagstaff, AZ – Today two prescribed burns have been approved, however, before proceeding with ignition, Fire Managers will assess conditions – such as winds – in each project area.
For next week, only if conditions are favorable, crews have several tentative projects planned. Conditions on which prescribed fire activity is dependent include personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
Fort Valley Project – 350 acres located north of Flagstaff and Hwy 180 off Snowbowl Road. To help minimize smoke impacts to residents, crews will burn 50-100 acre increments at a time. During the day, the majority of smoke will travel northeast over the peaks and through Schultz Pass. Winds in tonight’s forecast should help smoke continue to disperse throughout the evening, however if winds become light, smoke will likely settle in the Fort Valley area overnight. Smoke may also be noticeable in East Flagstaff/Doney Park area.
Upper Beaver Creek Project – 500 acres located just west of Lake Mary Road (FH3) near Stoneman Lake Rd. Crews will also be implementing this burn in smaller increments at a time. Smoke will disperse to the east with today’s winds. Some light residual smoke may settle toward Beaver Creek and the Rimrock area overnight.
Tentative projects for next week:
Woody Ridge, southwest of Flagstaff in the vicinity of Woody Mountain Road
East Side, east of Flagstaff and Country Club on Campbell Mesa, between Old Walnut Canyon Road and I-40
Mountainaire, south of Flagstaff near the community of Mountainaire
Upper Beaver Creek
Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
