Prescribed burn update, 2:00 p.m.

Flagstaff, AZ – Smoke in the Flagstaff area today is from the Mountainaire Prescribed Fire Project, south of Flagstaff. Though conditions were favorable this morning, fire managers stopped ignition early because of ventilation concerns. Crews only ignited 150 acres of the planned 500 for the day.
Expect smoke to continue to be noticeable in town for the remainder of the day. Cold temperatures will force residual smoke to settle – especially in low-lying areas – tonight, and it should begin lift tomorrow morning as the day warms.
Fire managers will not ignite on this project tomorrow.

Crews did complete ignition on the Upper Beaver Creek Project, located near Stoneman Lake. The majority of smoke is dispersing away from the Verde Valley today, however, some residual smoke will likely settle toward Beaver Creek and the Rimrock area overnight.

Prescribed burns at Mountainaire and Upper Beaver Creek Thursday

Flagstaff, AZ –
Crews completed ignition on the Fort Valley prescribed fire today. Pending favorable conditions, crews are planning two prescribed burns tomorrow.

Mountainaire Project
– 500 acres located southeast of Flagstaff and east of Mountainaire, just southwest of the area crews treated Tuesday. Smoke should disperse to the north and east during the day. Overnight, residual smoke will likely settle around I-17 and Mountainaire, as well as the Heckethorne area off Lake Mary Road.

Upper Beaver Creek Project
– 800 acres located between Lake Mary Road (FH3) and I-17 near Stoneman Lake. Winds must be blowing from the west for this burn to take place. West winds will disperse smoke easterly, away from the Verde Valley, however, some light residual smoke may settle toward Beaver Creek and the Rimrock area overnight.

Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (
www.azdeq.gov).
