Pile Burning to Continue on Tusayan Ranger District
TUSAYAN, Ariz. - Tusayan Ranger District fire managers plan to continue burning slash piles Thursday near Tusayan if conditions are appropriate. Approximately 60 acres are available for ignition by the Grand Canyon Airport.
Crews will ignite early in the morning to allow for maximum smoke dispersal. The National Weather Service predicts southwest winds Thursday. Smoke may settle into low lying areas overnight. The legal description is T30N, R2E, Sec. 34.
Piles are made of stacked tree slash cut during thinning projects. Burning the piles returns important nutrients to the soil, completing fire’s regenerative cycle. The goals of thinning and pile burning include improving forest health, reducing fire hazard, and protecting communities.
