Prescribed pile burning at Naval Observatory
Flagstaff, AZ – The Flagstaff Fire Department's Wildland Fire Crew will implement a 20 acre prescribed pile burn today, Monday November 29th. Slash piles will be burned at the US Naval Observatory located just west of town (legal coordinates: T21N, R6E, Sec22, NE1/4).
Material being burned is the result of forest thinning activities implemented to reduce the risk of wildfire and help restore forest health. Forecast winds and good ventilation conditions are expected to disperse smoke towards the east, switching to the south this afternoon.

Coconino National Forest prescribed fire plans for the week of November 29
Flagstaff, AZ – Fire managers have shifted their focus from broadcast burning to pile burning. Today, Coconino National Forest crews plan to ignite two prescribed pile burning projects.
Eastside Project – Piles are located south of I-40 near the Walnut Canyon interchange. Smoke will be noticeable from I-40 as well as the Country Club area during ignition. Overnight, smoke is expected to drain south toward Walnut Canyon.
Mint Project – Piles are located just south of Mormon Lake Village. Smoke will likely be noticeable around Mormon Lake Village and Lake Mary Rd (Forest Highway 3).
Tentative projects for the remainder of the week:
Eastside project, generally located in East Flagstaff from the base of Mount Elden to Doney Park to Walnut Canyon area
Mountainaire project, located south of Flagstaff, east of I-17 near the community of Mountainaire
Oak Creek Canyon piles
Miscellenaous piles across the Mogollon Rim Ranger District
Piles consist of the small branches and debris from forest thinning projects and are typically burned during the winter when precipitation on the ground helps keep fire from spreading to the surrounding vegetation. Pile burning generally produces lighter smoke.
All prescribed fire activity is dependent include personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
Fire managers work hard to balance the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires with the importance of minimizing smoke impacts to communities. The Coconino National Forest coordinates prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the overall impact of smoke on the communities.
