Prescribed pile burns planned for Wednesday

Flagstaff, AZ – The rain in Northern Arizona this week has made fuels too wet to conduct broadcast burns (applying fire along the forest floor), however, the higher moisture levels create conditions that are ideal for pile burning.

Slash piles are made of branches, small logs, and other debris from forest thinning projects. Burning them requires more moisture on the ground to prevent surrounding vegetation from igniting. Smoke from pile burns is generally light.

For Wednesday, October 6:
Mountainaire Project: Slash piles are located south of Flagstaff, west of Lake Mary Road off Forest Road 867. Smoke light smoke may be noticeable around Walnut Canyon, Lake Mary Road, and Heckethorn Acres during the day. Piles are smaller and should be completely consumed by this evening; residual smoke will be minimal.
Eastside Project: Piles are located East of Pine Canyon and Southwest of Herald Ranch Road. Light smoke may be noticeable in the Herald Ranch area during the day, but because piles are smaller, they’ll be completely consumed by this evening and residual smoke will be minimal.

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. Fire managers on the Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on weather – including ventilation conditions, personnel availability, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).
