Tentative prescribed fire plans for the week of Oct 4; temporary closure of Griffith’s Springs Trail

Flagstaff, AZ – Pending favorable conditions, fire managers are planning prescribed fires on several projects next week.

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities.

One way to do this is to burn larger blocks of area at a time to reduce the number of days smoke is in the air. Burning 500 acres at one time will produce significantly fewer days of smoke than if crews were to only burn one hundred acres per day for several days.

In addition, fire managers on the Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the chances of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on weather – including ventilation conditions, personnel availability, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

For Monday, October 4:
East Clear Creek Project 500 acres south of Hwy 87 southwest Blue Ridge Reservoir. Smoke will disperse to the north during the day. Some residual smoke may be noticeable in the Clear Creek Pines subdivision, units 8 and 9.

For Tuesday, October 5:
Kachina Project – 320 acres located southeast of Hwy 89A between between Forest Highlands and Lindbergh Spring. As a precaution, Griffiths Springs Trail will be closed Tuesday and should be reopened by the afternoon of Friday, October 8.

Other tentative projects for the week:
A-1 Project east of Bellemont and south of Baderville
Fort Valley Project between Hwy 180 and Snowbowl Road
Woody Ridge Project southwest of Flagstaff in the vicinity of Woody Mountain Road
Mountainaire Project south of Flagstaff, east of I-17 near Mountainaire
APS Project north of Hwy 87 and the Blue Ridge RS
Upper Beaver Creek Project near the junction of Stoneman Lake Road and Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3)
