One prescribed fire planned for Friday

Flagstaff, AZ – Crews completed ignition on all three planned prescribed fire projects today – the Blue Ridge Urban Interface (BRUI), Kachina, and A-1 projects. Smoke will continue to dissipate the remainder of the day. Some smoke may be noticeable in Flagstaff this evening, but should be light. One prescribed fire project is planned for tomorrow, October 1.

Fire managers work hard to address the critical need for reducing the risk of severe wildfires near homes and neighborhoods while minimizing smoke impacts to communities. “The forests in Northern Arizona are fire-adapted ecosystems. Fire is natural, necessary, and will occur,” say’s Russ Copp, Forest Fire and Aviation Manager. “We make a conscious effort to keep smoke impacts to a minimum.”

One way to do this is to burn larger blocks of area at a time to reduce the number of days smoke is in the air. “If our conditions all line-up right, we can burn 500 acres at once instead of only one hundred acres per day for five days.”

In addition, fire managers on the Coconino National Forest coordinate prescribed fire plans with the other partners in the Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council (which includes local fire departments), as well as neighboring forests, to reduce the changes of multiple prescribed fire projects impacting one area.

All prescribed fire activity is dependent on personnel availability, weather – including ventilation conditions, and approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (www.azdeq.gov).

Ritter Project 400 acres west of I-17 at the Willard Springs interchange. Smoke will be noticeable south of Flagstaff and on I-17 and will disperse to the northeast. Residual smoke will settle toward Hwy 89 A and Oak Creek Canyon.
