Prescribed Fire Update

WILLIAMS, Ariz. – The National Weather Service is predicting a significant change from the current  hot, dry weather pattern. The forecast shows cloudy skies, much cooler temperatures, and a chance of showers for Northern Arizona beginning today. Fire managers are considering this information as they plan for the next prescribed burn on the Williams Ranger District.

If conditions are appropriate, fire crews may ignite the City Sheridan prescribed burn Tuesday October 5, or Wednesday October 6. This 141-acre project is on the south side of Williams at the end of Sheridan Street. Smoke will be visible in and around Williams during operations. Smoke may remain in the local area for several days, gradually tapering off each day.

Smoke monitoring equipment has been installed in Williams. For air quality information, please check the following website: http://www.satguard.com/USFS/ and click on Real Time Data, Location, Arizona, and the dot by Williams. There is also an Air Quality Index tab that further explains the health ratings.

Earlier this week, forest officials canceled the Sheridan project because the temperature was expected to exceed the parameters for the burn. Each prescribed burn has specifc criteria that needs to be met before managers can implement the project. These factors include temperature, humidity, wind, fuel moisture and ventilation.

The goals of the prescribed fire program are removing hazardous fuels, improving forest health, and reducing the potential for high intensity destructive fires.  For additional information, please call Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
