Prescribed Fire Update

WILLIAMS, Ariz. –  The current moist storm system in Northern Arizona is affecting plans for prescribed burning this week on the Williams Ranger District. Burning could occur in two locations on the forest depending on how much rain falls today and over the next few days. All of our burns are contingent on approval from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
First, crews may burn approximately 50 acres of slash piles Tuesday, October 5 near Horse Hill. This unit is 11 miles east of Williams and two miles south of I-40. Managers expect smoke to travel north with overnight impacts south and west of the piles.
Second, officials may implement the Pineaire project north of Parks near the Maine Consolidated School, Saturday, October 9. This burn is in coordination with a prescribed fire the Ponderosa Fire Department is planning to conduct on the school property at the same time. Smoke will settle in Parks and outlying areas.
Fire managers have canceled plans for the City Sheridan project on the south side of Williams at the end of Sheridan Street. Too much precipitation has fallen on this 141-acre unit.
