Repo version, worked flawlessly from the beginning.
The problem was with the official Mozilla binaries, from here:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release
(The Linux x64 BZ2 archive).

After installing the Debian specific hacks (mentioned above) for
PulseAudio, problem solved.
