As others have said, this option is available as a per-address basis

Settings -> Configure kmal -> accounts -> modify -> enable interval checking

And there is a kicker applet to show you that you have new mail.

In my opinion kmail is largely better that thunderbird, but tht is a personal 
opinion,,,
