Not knowing what the problems were nor how you solved them it's difficult to 
analyse. What's more I never run *buntu, but the fact that you say it 
switches back to Gnome lets me ask what dm you're running.

Being a live CD, did you do any update after install?

I've seen such things after an update that caused GDM3 or Lightdm to be set 
back as DM. You could try 

dpkg-reconfigure gdm3

or

dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

then

dpkg-reconfigure tdm-trinity

If this works you can also uninstall the other dm alltogether.
