I don't have xinetd installed.  I'm running openbsd-inetd

$ apt-cache policy openbsd-inetd
openbsd-inetd:
  Installed: 0.20080125-6
  Candidate: 0.20080125-6

        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

$ apt-cache policy xinetd
xinetd:
  Installed: (none)

$ telnet localhost 106
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
200 poppassd v1.8.5 hello, who are you?
user aaa@xxxxxxxxxxxx
200 Your password please.
pass mypasswd
500 Old password is incorrect.

I'm at lost.  With this password I can login SquirrelMail

Noted and thanks

Sorry, I made a mistake.  After checking the notes taken at installing this server, I ran following steps creating user account and password:-

$ sudo adddovecotuser aaa@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Adding user aaa@xxxxxxxxxxxx to /etc/dovecot/users
Creating user directory /home/vmail/mydomain.com/info
Adding user to /etc/postfix/vmaps
postfix/postfix-script: refreshing the Postfix mail system

Create a password for the new email user
Enter new password: mypasswd
Retype new password: mypasswd
Adding password for aaa@xxxxxxxxxxxx to /etc/dovecot/passwd
