To give you an idea, I have X configuired to use 1280x1024, 1024x768,
and 800x600 in 24bpp and 16bpp. I have 8bpp configures to only 800x600
for games. This is on an older system with a limited video card, just
cannot handle games at high resolution and depth.
24bpp is the default. But I can start 8bpp (or 16bpp)
using 'startx -- -depth 8'
For a while I had a setup that only setup 800x600 in 24bpp for games on
another system. The card was too slow for high resand color in games.
Once I got a better video card I no longer needed that.
But XF86 supports a lot of things that the config tools don't show you.
A lot of it isn't really needed anymore, unless you use old hardware,
but it's there.
