I'd like some insight on how to change the color depth in X... anybody having any ideas??
Thanks in advance
modify the line in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.
Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24
this says the Defalt to use if 24bpp (16.7million colors)
SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection
This defines the 24bpp setup. The screen resolution is 1152x864.
using <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<+ or minus on the numeric keypad> will cycle through the rest. It's just a smaller veiwport to the larger screen though.
If you want to use other depths/resolutions try redhat-config-xfree86
(It's in the settings menu as "Display", with a bubble help saying "Configure resolution and colors").
EndSection
You can configure multiple depths (and associated resolutions) and select then when starting X (from the command line). Read the XF86Config and XFree86 man pages to learn how. It's a bit complicated.
I also know my monitor has more modes than the ones listed above. Windows gives me about 8 options and they all work.
Look for the monitor section in youre XF86Config file and post it.
Also look through /var/log/XFree86.0.log. There will be lines about the default modes like:
(II) R128(0): Not using default mode "1920x1440" (hsync out of range)
(**) R128(0): Default mode "640x480": 36.0 MHz, 43.3 kHz, 85.0 Hz
(II) R128(0): Modeline "640x480" 36.00 640 696 752 832 480 481 484 509 -hsync -vsync
This is an ATI Rage128 card, something related to you card will replace the R128(0) part.
Look it over and see if you can find the modes you want listed and if they are marked not used and why.
