anybody having any ideas??

Thanks in advance

modify the line in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file.

So, what is colour depth? Mine is set to 24. What does that mean and what other possible values are there?

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Videocard0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
   SubSection "Display"
       Depth 24
       Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
   EndSubSection
EndSection

I also know my monitor has more modes than the ones listed above. Windows gives me about 8 options and they all work.

color depth is the number of colors used in the display. you could have several values, the most popular are 16bit, 24bit, and 32bit (sometimes called true color).

i am less familiar with the way the modes are determined, but i do know that the line you see there shows you what progression your machine will use. eg, it will try to start X with 1152x864 and if that fails it will move down to 1024x768 and so on.

i also know that if you can find your exact monitor in the configuration, or if you input your monitor's specs manually, your choices will be better suited to your particular setup.
