So, what is colour depth? Mine is set to 24. What does that mean and what other possible values are there?
Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24
this says the Defalt to use if 24bpp (16.7million colors)
Oh, I knew about 16 bit and 32 bit. Never realized there was one in between.
SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection
This defines the 24bpp setup. The screen resolution is 1152x864.
using <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<+ or minus on the numeric keypad> will cycle through the rest. It's just a smaller veiwport to the larger screen though.
Looks handy: Kinda like a magnifying glass. The mouse moving to the sides of the screen causes the screen to scroll. I like that feature.
If you want to use other depths/resolutions try redhat-config-xfree86Both my monitor and video card are perfectly recognized by name. Clicking on display and then on resolution does give me a list of 9 screen sizes, and they do work.
(It's in the settings menu as "Display", with a bubble help saying "Configure resolution and colors").
Actually, changing them in DISPLAY is easier for me.EndSection
You can configure multiple depths (and associated resolutions) and select then when starting X (from the command line). Read the XF86Config and XFree86 man pages to learn how. It's a bit complicated.
Thanks for the info! :-*
