If you have an investment in linux, it would be easier to switch to debian, and their apt-get system seems about like up2date. I would think in a school you would have a lot of desktops, and linux is looking pretty good in desktops. People who must run Office can do it with Crossover Office. User Mode Linux is a great educational tool and it runs great on debian. There is the K12LTSP project. The bookstores and the web are loaded with excellent linux books but (relatively) few on FreeBSD. My understanding is that FreeBSD is preferred by security and 24x7 datacenter folks who want to stay away from the bleeding edge, but you should be able to set your own distance without leaving the linux community.
