According to xbitlabs  or aces hardware (don't remember which) they
*think* it is actually lower than Athlon power consumption, but I
haven't seen any other articles about it.

You may want to wait for Athlon 64 instead for home use.  Opteron isn't
quite available with AGP slots yet.
