I'm late on this thread.... but I'm using the SMP kernel with no problem. 
Last week, I was using an old 4X panasonic SCSI burner and a SCSI 16x 
CDROM with no problems. Not much of a test!

Anyways, I just switched to a IDE burner and CDROM, and it's workin fine at 
24x. It's a Lite-On 40x12x48.

I use cdrecord from the command line, and once I create my iso with:

# mkisofs -r -o /tank/out/cd_image.iso /tank/in/

I then do:

cdrecord -v speed=24 dev=1,0,0 -data /tank/out/cd_image.iso

CD to CD would be:

cdrecord -v dev=1,0,0 speed=24 -isosize /dev/scd0

Note that the burner is /dev/hdc for me, so your dev= above might be 
different. Do a "cdrecord -scanbus" to confirm.
