Pete,

I wonder if your Adaptec card might (a) be misbehaving because of voltage
or timing errors in its PCI expansion slot, or (b) in need of a new driver
for RH8.0. Can you move this card to another PCI slot? Have you tried
contacting Adaptec?  Or Dell?  Both are active Linux supporters.

And just for giggles & grins, see if adding 'noapic' to the kernel line in
your grub.conf file helps at all.
