Maybe people just are more likely to complain than to
say positive things :-)

The default rendering in FreeType-2.1.3 is much like the 
Red Hat 8 rendering, so apparently David Turner (who knows
just a bit about fonts) doesn't think that the change is
ridiculous.

Our graphics artist wanted things even more fuzzy (and
less distorted) then the way we shipped them.

Well, actually, the ability to read that file has been there
forever, it's just we didn't used to ship one.

No docs that I'm aware of, other than reading the X init
script /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.
