It looks to me like your hard drive is failing.  Have a look at the end
of /var/log/messages and run dmesg to confirm this.

Did you startx as root or as a normal user?

If the disk is failing, then fsck won't do you any good.  You'll need to
restore from backups or re-install onto working hardware.
