However, I still wonder this behaviour, because I was able to repeat the failure (3 times) just by logging in KDE. Ok, maybe I have compatability problems, too. If someone is interested the procedure was as follows: 1) X did not work after a login in KDE 2) reason: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input was corrupted 3) fix the disk with fsck (remember unmout root) 4) install xfree-rpm again (rpm -i --force XFree86-4.3.0-2.90.43.i386.rpm in this case) Thank you for you guys for helping and being interested!
