It did work after the reboot. 

I was looking around, trying to find any mention of the wavelan2
driver--so I could tell it to not load it, and it seems cardmgr was
the one holding onto that quaint old notion in memory.

I seem to have working wireless again.  I should do another machine
backup now I guess.
