Actually, that's not true. Apple has maintained backwards
compatibility with its proprietary software for at least 4 versions
of its operating system. Only with the most recent new version are
they finally breaking that.
For the snapper, iPhoto is capable of doing all they'll ever realize
they need and no new drivers are needed to get the photos from camera
to application. Sure, the most recent version of iPhoto is much
improved in features for image adjustment than earlier versions. But
that's not the audience that Jobs is after.
As most of us understand he aimed his products at the home user.
Now Adobe is another problem. But even they accomodate the
slow-upgrade-er. Even though I'm still running PSCS3, and there's no
plugin for my Canon 7D, Adobe still does provide a way for me to get
my RAW images reformatted so I don't have to upgrade to PSCS5. And
it's free.
