and here, for over 60 years I've always referred to "that" piece of
tack, as a whippletree!

It's an elusive beast, Ken. It is also referred to as a whiffletree in
some parts. Now, here, when you hitch two horses to a wagon, you use a
doubletree. What do whippletree users call their tack for two horse
hitches?
