Certainly many photogs who are on the move use a waist belt
arrangment for the things they need more immediately while storing
the less used things on their back. A vest is also an item to
consider.
I find a backpack useless to shooting on the go but I use one anyway
because my vest drags on my neck. Generally the camera lives around
the neck and the other lens lives in a pocket of my trousers or
raincoat
As for the tripod, one can get bags that have two straps and can be
worn on the back, but the tripod bag must go vertically up the back
and even then one must always consider what size one has become.
Apparently there is now some kind of Golf bag that goes on the back
like a backpack.
During the year I shot for the local paper I wore out a Galen Rowell
chest pack with two side pockets. By photoflex.
