Check ebay and look for a Tamron 28-105 f2.8.  This lens runs about 800.00 brand new, but you can get a really good used one for half that.  Note- If money were not an issue, I would strongly suggest the Canon 28-300 Image stabilized, L series, USM lens - about $2000 but it is probably the only lens you would ever need. This is particularly true in a climate where digital cameras are approaching resolutions greater than most lenses are capable of producing.

Congrats on moving up the Canon...you'll really enjoy it. 
 
One of my very favorite lenses for my digital work is the 28-105mm lens that originally came as part of my Canon A2 kit I bought oh so many years ago. It's a fine, sharp lens with good contrast and for a zoom is pretty darn light. If I could have only one lens, that would be the one for me.
