Trust the autofocus, especially the little indicator inside the
viewfinder. And Karl is correct, you're not actually seeing the
scene in focus, but seeing what's on the mirror.
Finally, get glass glasses, not plastic. They don't scratch anywhere
near as badly. I also have graduated lenses and generally use the
middle area. I cannot deal with the line at all. I tried for three
years and it drove me nuts every day.
