I think, also, the hanging of a show can be a further expression of the artist's vision. I've found that most galleries have "rules" artist's should follow when hanging, but the bending of the rules can make a statement and the artist should be given a little leeway. I understand the reason for a gallery's rules, however.

Marilyn,

I agree with most of the ideas except perhaps the last - "concept" - too vague and subject to editorializing. Generally my biggest concern is that adjacent pictures not clash in some obvious way with regard to mood or size. Also, I presume the suggestions were for an exhibit with a lot of different artists. Stacking pictures isn't that big as deal for a large show and can look just fine. Hanging a show is an art in itself. I've known people who can really boutique the joint and make a C-plus show look great.

Recently, on PhotoForum, there was a discussion about hanging art for an
exhibit.

Here are some suggestions I received from someone who has a very long list
of accomplishments in the world of art. I just thought I'd pass them
along.

Here are a few ideas for displaying your art at your show.
a.. Center of all hanging art to be at a particular height (60"-63")
b.. All wall art framed or have clean finished edges (no staple canvas
edges showing)
c.. No stacked art unless painted in a series to be sold as one piece
(triptych, etc)
d.. At least 16" between hanging wall art
e.. Name, title tags, lower right hand corner (set a number of inches)
f.. Sculpture on pedestals not blocking hanging art
g.. Groupings of art, have a sense of symetry and logical order in regards
to height, widths, concepts
