Genuine Fractals is the most common one. It was invented 6 or 7
years ago to uprez images relatively invisibly compared to the
algorithms available in Photoshop. There are probably 400 people
in the photography world whose entire intellectual lives are
engrossed in determining which method of uprezzing is the least
visible. All kinds of methods get discussed on the Stockphoto list
at least once a week. Some do step uprezzing using the bicubic
algorithm in Photoshop, some disdain Genuine Fractals entirely as too
obvious. Some just live with the result when you get the best scan
you can and print the bigger sizes at 150 or 200 dpi instead of 300.
Personally, I've seen 12x18 prints at 125 dpi on glossy paper from
24M scans printed by one or the other of those roll paper machines
which are totally acceptable.
