Much as I hate (or should I say, love to hate) copyright discussions you
are correct foe the UK too.

The only way Chris's gran could have "owned" copyright of that image would
be if the photographer had formally transferred it.  The info said "unknown
professional".  On many old family photos in my collection there are marks
on the back indicating they were taken by long-gone photographers (though
probably less than 70y dead).  There is no way to trace the copyright owner
- but if ever one became worth a million dollars I bet one would soon pop
out of the woodwork ;o)

PS:  model releases are a modern invention I'm guessing. I bet they had
no legal standing (in the UK at least) until recently - if at all!!!
