Perfect Karl! The essence is that all countries act in their own 'national interest' which tends to be defined by a political elite and that sometimes it works well - and often it does not. When it doesn't justifications are sought, ugly bits glossed over, one's own role is expanded and the result enters the national psyche as 'The Truth.' It's just such a puzzle when others then don't see the truth of history in quite the same way.
