Ah there was some effort to make lavf the default demuxer for .mkv, but that didn't play nice with ass. I lost track of whether lavf is now the default demuxer for mkv or not, and whether the issues with ass and lavf have been fixed yet or not. I suspect libmpdemux is back as default.
