Have you read the file /DOCS/tech/dvdnav-howto.txt I've been using this method to get great DVD support from mplayer. I think there has been a lot of confusion about DVD support. But how to get to work properly is documented. In addition I would recommend installing libdvdcss. With this setup I was able to play every DVD that I have tried.
