Greg, thanks for the answer, but---- After adding speakup_dtlk to the modules file, which btw was empty except for comments, doing update-initramfs -u got the following stuff. Speakup didn't come up on reboot. This looks like brltty wasn't properly installed, should I just do apt-get install brltty? Below the output of the init-ramfs -u command update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae Installing BRLTTY into initramfs.../usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: 28: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: dpkg-architecture: not found /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: 29: //usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: dpkg-architecture: not found /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: 30: //usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: dpkg-architecture: not found cp: cannot stat `/usr/lib//gconv': No such file or directory E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty failed with return 1. update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae with 1. Am looking into installing a kernel from debian backports thanks Tom Fowle wa6ivgtf@xxxxxxxxxxx On Thu, Aug 14, 2014, at 08:21 PM, Susan Fowle wrote: > From: Gregory Nowak <[1]greg@xxxxxxxxx> To: "Speakup is a > screen review system for Linux." <[2]speakup@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Subject: Re: speakup on debian wheezy Date: Thu, 14 Aug 2014 > 13:18:59 -0700 On Wed, Aug 13, 2014 at 10:16:40PM -0700, Tom > Fowle wrote: > > Hi folks; Just installed latest debian wheezy on my ancient > asus 1.3 gig box with a doubletalk PC internal the install > went fine with speech.
