Greg,
thanks for the answer, but----
After adding
speakup_dtlk
to the modules file, which btw was empty except for comments,
doing
update-initramfs -u
got the following stuff.
Speakup didn't come up on reboot.

This looks like brltty wasn't properly installed,
should I just do
apt-get install brltty?

Below the output of the init-ramfs -u command
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae
Installing BRLTTY into
initramfs.../usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty:

//usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty: dpkg-architecture: not found
cp: cannot stat `/usr/lib//gconv': No such file or directory
E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/brltty failed with return 1.
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-4-686-pae with 1.

Am looking into installing a kernel from debian backports
thanks
