My only reason for skipping aplay was the slight performance increase of
using eSpeak's own code to play the sound instead of having to store a
wav file and load aplay to play it. The performance increase is very
small on my AMD Athlon XP 1800+ machine, but it makes a difference on my
laptop, which is supposed to have a 2.8ghz pentium processor but runs
much slower than this box. So far, since I am using aplay again, the
cutoff bug has completely gone away.

HTH,
Lorenzo
