I got the issue: it were completely unrelated with the driver or with the libv4l:

I had this line on my ~/.mplayer/config:

# Enable video de-interlacing and crop to the proper window
vf             = crop=628:470:6:10,pp=lb


This is nice for TV, but for sure doesn't apply for webcams ;)

I replaced it to:
vf              = screenshot,cropdetect

This makes no difference for webcam, and will hopefully auto-crop with some TV
boards. It also enables the useful screenshot 's' key.

What application works better with libv4l? Btw, it would be nice to have some
apps linked with libv4l at epel repository ;)
