Thanks a bunch Antonio, that seems to have enabled detection and I was
able to dial out with it but now it seems to disconnect:

barbara@ubuntu-barb:/etc$ sudo wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT2063121000
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT2063121000
--> Disconnecting at Sat Apr 11 13:52:06 2009

This was after I ran sudo wvdialconf

barbara@ubuntu-barb:/etc$ cat /etc/wvdial.conf (some values edited)

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Baud = 460800
New PPPD = yes
Modem = /dev/ttySL0
ISDN = 0
Phone = (edited)
Password = (edited)
Username = (edited)
