Hi Mark, Yes, then it's game over for the internal modem... at least for now. Modem wise, the serial modem is the best bet, but if you don't have any serial ports, then there's a delimma... You can try the USB modem (plug it in and run ScanModem to see what it recommends). Some USB modems work well in Linux, since they have a full modem controller, and others not so because they are also USB softmodems. Another thought is to buy a USB-to Serial adapter- if you can get that to work with Linux, then you can almost guarantee the serial modem will work. If you would rather not open both boxes (i.e. so you can return one and keep the one that works) then you might want to do some googling for other success/failure stories for those two models you have- that would at least send you in the right direction as to which one to start with.
