Ann,

If you search Google for "Earthlink  Linux dialup"
there are  a variety of sites with suggestions, mostly old.  One I
read claims that
ELN/your_username

Is the proper designation.

Also try using the
$ sudo pppconfig
to setup dialout.  It does have a CHAP option.
After you finish, try dialing out with:
$ sudo pon
