Thanks, Marvin. I had a Conexant modem and Linuxant drivers installed,
but they didn't work, so I installed another used modem. I can't get
hsfmodem to stop loading on boot, so I blacklisted the drivers
in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.

The hsfmodem drivers as is cannot support either of your modems,
and they may interfere. So your first step is
$ sudo hsfconfig --uninstall
Then reboot and run
