My final thoughts on this saga as advice to bystanders is DON'T.
Slackware 11 is built for kernel 2.4, wait for Slackware 12.
Even Slackware 10.x has included kernel 2.6 kernels.
That is not the point. You need to read the whole thread (and
research any bits you don't understand).
Also, be sure to read (on the Slackware disc)...
/extra/linux-2.6.17.13/kernel-headers.WARNING
...and note that 2.6.18 is in */testing* (and comes with warning
messages).
(You will need to install the kernel-headers to compile `martian'
and I believe it's unlikely the martian developers can do much about
that.)
Essentially, you're breaking the seal and voiding your warranty...
but that's OK, since after all you didn't _have_ a warranty.
For that matter, there are good reasons why Patrick is sticking
with 2.6.18 for 12 rather than 2.6.20, which is supposedly the latest and
greatest.
As I believe I've remarked before, this Linux thingy will be
really neat when they finish it.

The total of electricity consumed by the hardware supporting the
major Internet search engines in 2006 approached 5 gigawatts,
similar to what was needed for the Las Vegas metropolitan area
on a hot day.
