My final thoughts on this saga as advice to bystanders is DON'T.
Slackware 11 is built for kernel 2.4, wait for Slackware 12.
If you feel you must tho, it can be done. The way to go would be:
install the 2.6.18 kernel source _and_ headers (and read the warning
notice re the headers) from /extra; configure, build and install the
kernel; prevail on Patrick to give you the bash package that lets the
`scanModem' script run; and fix it all up from there.
With packages like martian, the version skew between the glibc
kernel headers and the kernel is an issue that there's no easy way around,
so far as I can see.
