As a DVCS, git offers us many of the tools we need for business continuity in the case the GitHub service is no longer able to provide service.  Source of documents (and their history) is preserved in every copy of the repository, even if we can no longer benefit from some of the more advanced features.

But this is more a matter for draft-ietf-git-github-wg-configuration, which has a section addressing this specific concern.  That document is under discussion in the git working group.
