I've personally felt disinclined to get involved in this kind of work for such reasons. ISTM that starting i18n discussions by saying how little others know isn't a way to encourage folks to do work, and does happy noticeably often. Now it could be that it's better that someone who knows as little as I about the topic is not involved, but in the last couple of decades in the IETF we have I think seen a lot of IETF participants learn enough about security to do well, (or cause less accidental harm anyway:-), but I don't think we can say the same about i18n.
