I always thought an opportunity was missed when coming up with the socket interface for IPv6 in that we didn't push the management of the address down to the kernel, having the kernel return a 'handle' (like a file handle) in struct sockaddr_in instead of the bit pattern that was actually used on the network. We might even have been able to use the class E address space as the handle thereby making the upgrade to IPv6 much more transparent to applications than it is now.
