It is pretty easy to see where the Internet is headed at this point. The Web is the only open system that hasn't fallen into disrepair.
I would claim that the web has fallen into disrepair.
It's a huge honking mess that seems likely to drown in its own
increasing complexity even if nothing comes along to replace it.
Some of what's there will probably survive, but I don't know how
much or how ubiquitous it will be.
