Here are some of my observations where we can improve writing in the Magazine: * Avoid passive voice, which unnecessarily lengthens sentences and is harder to read. NOT AS GOOD: A new release of the Firefox package was made by the maintainers last week. BETTER: Maintainers made a new Firefox release last week. * Avoid gerunds -- words that end with "-ing." They are often signs of a weak or passive voice, and they decrease readability. Reformulate the sentence. NOT AS GOOD: The resolution is aiming to decrease the time between security updates. BETTER: The resolution aims to decrease the time between security updates. * Shorter sentences are easier to read. Avoid long compound sentences where possible. * Shorter words are easier to read. Avoid big words where a smaller one is just as effective. * Brevity is great, but clarity is fabulous. -- Paul W.
